The Rusty Spade blog was built using WordPress. The blog in the original release was built to resemble a gardener’s notebook. To keep costs down, it was built using a free theme. Additionally, Google Analytics was setup gather information about blog visitors, topic trends, and to measure the success of the blog by its owner.

To celebrate its one year blogiversary, the blog was re-themed and additional features were added throughout the year.

The new features were:

• Rusty Spade Shop – an Amazon storefront was created and implemented.
• Gardening Calendar – a gardening calendar was added to promote gardening related events by other gardeners
